The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), in collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), held a session of the MEST Visibility Webinar Series focused on CSIR’s interventions on flooding.

The webinar formed part of efforts to highlight the contribution of Ghana’s scientific and research institutions to addressing national development challenges through research, innovation and evidence-based solutions.

Focus of the Webinar

The session examined scientific and technological interventions being undertaken by CSIR and its specialised institutes in relation to flooding.

Flooding remains an important environmental and development challenge, particularly in urban communities where intense rainfall, drainage constraints, land-use pressures and other factors can expose lives, property and infrastructure to significant risk.

The webinar provided a platform for researchers and sector experts to discuss relevant scientific work and interventions aimed at improving understanding of the problem and supporting appropriate responses.

Ministerial Participation

The session featured Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and then Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, as a keynote speaker.

The Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Prof. Paul Bosu, also participated as a keynote speaker.

Their participation highlighted the importance of collaboration between Government and national research institutions in applying scientific knowledge to environmental and developmental challenges.

Technical Presentations

The webinar brought together researchers and senior officials from specialised CSIR institutes to provide technical perspectives on flooding and related interventions.

Participants included:

  • Dr Daniel Asenso Gyambibi, Director of the CSIR-Building and Road Research Institute (CSIR-BRRI), who moderated the session;
  • Dr Joseph Agyei Danquah, Senior Research Scientist and Head of the Geo-Informatics Division at CSIR-BRRI;
  • Dr Roland Asare, Senior Research Scientist and Head of the Industry and Services Division at CSIR-Science and Technology Policy Research Institute (CSIR-STEPRI); and
  • Dr Wilhemina Quaye, Director of CSIR-STEPRI, who delivered the vote of thanks.

The session was moderated with support from Mr Ibrahim Kwame Asante as Master of Ceremonies.

Strengthening Science-Based Solutions

The MEST Visibility Webinar Series provides an avenue for the Ministry and its sector institutions to communicate scientific work, research outcomes and technological interventions to stakeholders and the wider public.

Through engagements of this nature, the Ministry continues to promote greater visibility for Ghana’s scientific institutions while encouraging the application of research and innovation to practical national development challenges.

The Ministry remains committed to strengthening collaboration among Government institutions, researchers, industry, communities and other stakeholders in developing sustainable and evidence-based responses to environmental challenges.
